James Carter is a Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist and composer, holding a Bachelor of Music with Honours (2009) and a Masters of Music Performance (2015) from Monash University. James has performed with prominent Australian musicians Julien Wilson, Jamie Oehlers, Stephen Magnusson, David Beck, Tony Floyd, Ben Robertson, Tony Gould and James Morrison. James has also attended New York University and studied and performed with international artists such as Jean-Michel Pilc, Dave Pietro, Andy Gravish, Chris Potter, George Garzone, John Scofield, Wayne Krantz, Dave Liebman, Kenny Werner, Stefon Harris, Dafnis Prieto, Will Vinson and Ellery Eskelin.
In 2012, James released his debut album 'After All', distributed by Newmarket Music and launched at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club to critical acclaim. The album received strong reviews and significant national radio play around Australia. He released his follow up album 'Darkest Light' through Newmarket Music in 2017, featuring ARIA award winning Australian musicians Stephen Magnusson and Dave Beck.
James has performed at major festivals in Australia including the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. He maintains an active performing schedule and is an in-demand corporate and session saxophonist. He is a sought-after educator in Melbourne and completed a Masters of Teaching at Deakin University in 2023.
